- When shopping, always park in well lit areas and walk to your car with keys in hand. Be aware of what is going on around you.
- Be prepared for icy conditions as the weather changes quickly.
- Be sure to lock your car, roll up the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk of your car before you reach your next shopping destination.
- If traveling or out for the evening, set auto timers for lights and leave a TV or radio on tuned to a talk or news station. Ask a neighbor to watch your home & park an extra car in the driveway.
- When on vacation call your local police department and ask that your home be put on "vacation watch".
- Unattended cooking is a leading cause of home fires in the U.S.. Remember to keep an eye on the range.
- Try to keep live Christmas trees moist by watering daily and make sure to use a sturdy tree stand designed to not tip over. Watch children and pets around the tree.
- Be cautious with candles and open flames. Inspect light strings and don't overload extension cords.
- Don't display gifts where they can be seen from the outside; specifically, don't display your Christmas tree near the window as that's advertising the location of your gifts to possible intruders.
